FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my power safety switch keep tripping?
Go around your house and unplug everything in a powerpoint. Reset your circuit breaker. If it does not trip, one of the items you unplugged is faulty. Plug each item back in, one at a time, to determine which item it is. If your circuit breaker tripped with everything unplugged, then there is an issue with your internal electric wiring, a powerpoint, or the safety switch itself. For this you will need to call us to determine and fix the problem.
Can I do electrical jobs myself?
No. It is illegal for anyone but a qualified electrician to do wiring or rewiring of any premises, or any other type of electrical maintenance.
What is a safety switch?
A safety switch (RCD) is located on your switchboard and disconnects the power if any fault occurs on that circuit such as faulty wiring, appliance or switch.
My lights are dimmed and I have some power.
This is what is called a brownout. A brownout is a drop in the voltage in the electrical supply system coming from the street mains. Brownouts tend to be caused by increased demand for power, shortages in network capacity, or extreme weather conditions putting additional strain on the electricity network. As your electricity supply voltage is lower than normal, it is recommended that you turn off your televisions, computer equipment, gaming consoles, fans, fridges etc, as the lower voltage could cause damage to electronics and motors.
I have a blackout, what should I do?
Firstly check outside and see if everyone else is blacked out. If they are, then it’s an energy providers issue and it will be fixed soon. If it is just your house, go to the switchboard and turn your main safety switch back on. If power comes back on, everything should be fine. If it happens regularly, call us to inspect your electrical systems. If it trips immediately, turn off all other safety switches on your switchboard such as hotwater, powerpoints, lights, oven etc. Try turning main safety switch back on. If it still trips, call us immediately. If it doesn’t trip, turn each of the other safety switches back on, one at a time. Whichever one you turn on that trips your main switch will be the cause of the problem. Keep that one turned off and switch all the others back on, so you have most power back on, and call us to investigate the problem.
