Is my power out or is it an Energex issue?
To determine whether the power outage is specific to your premises or an Energex issue you need to confirm if anyone else around you also has a power outage. Verify if any of your neighbors are also experiencing a power outage. If they are, it is likely an issue with the electricity supply from Energex. Contact Energex to report the outage. You can also check the Energex website to confirm if they have a reported outage in your area.
If your house is the only house without lights or sign of power, it’s likely an issue with your switchboard or something has tripped your power. Follow these troubleshooting steps to figure out if it’s an appliance or you should call an electrician.
What is an electrical emergency? When to call an emergency electrician.
An electrical emergency refers to a situation that poses an immediate risk to your safety or property, due to an electrical issue. It requires prompt attention from a licensed electrical contractor. You should call an emergency electrician in the following scenarios:
Electrical shocks: If you or someone else experiences an electric shock, even a minor one, it is essential to seek immediate medical attention. After ensuring everyone’s safety, contact an emergency electrician to investigate the cause of the shock, and to rectify the electrical problem.
Power outage or lights: If you’re experiencing a complete power outage in your home or business, first check with your neighbours to determine if it’s a localised issue. If it’s not, and you have followed these troubleshooting steps and you’re still having issues, contact us on 0456 411 121 and one of our electricians can assess the situation and restore your power safely.
Note- If you are a tenant and the fault is caused by an appliance, your real estate will bill you for the call out. To avoid this, follow our tripping power troubleshooting guide.
Not hot water: If you have an electrical hot water system and you have no hot water, please call us and we’ll be happy to help.
Electrical fires: If you notice sparks, smoke, or flames coming from an electrical outlet, appliance, or wiring, evacuate the area immediately. Call the emergency services to report the fire, and then contact an emergency electrician to address the electrical fault and prevent further damage.
Burning smell: If you detect a persistent burning smell from outlets, switches, or electrical equipment, turn off the power supply at the main switchboard and contact an emergency electrician. This smell could indicate a wiring issue that poses a fire hazard.
Damaged electrical lines: If you observe fallen power lines, exposed wires, or damaged electrical infrastructure near your property, keep a safe distance and call emergency services immediately. They will coordinate with the appropriate authorities, including an emergency electrician, to address the issue.
In any of these situations, it is crucial to prioritise your safety and the safety of others. Contacting an emergency electrician ensures that a trained professional can assess and resolve the electrical problem promptly, minimising the risk of further damage or harm.
Why is my power tripping? How do I troubleshoot this?
There are various potential causes for a tripping power issue. Among the most common reasons are faulty appliances, overloaded circuits, vermant damage to cables and wiring issues. In most cases, it is recommended to seek the assistance of a professional electrician to diagnose the problem accurately. However, before calling for help, you can perform a basic troubleshooting process to determine if a specific appliance is the culprit. Follow the steps outlined in our troubleshooting guide.
Note: If you are a tenant and the fault is caused by an appliance, your real estate will bill you for the call out. To avoid this, follow our tripping power troubleshooting guide.
Why is my smoke alarm beeping?
Your smoke alarm may be beeping for several reasons, including:
1- Low battery: Most smoke alarms emit a periodic beep to indicate a low battery. If you are unable to change your battery or the beep continues, call us and book an electrician to come have a look.
2- Faulty smoke alarm: If the battery is not the issue, the smoke alarm itself may be faulty. Over time, smoke alarms can degrade or accumulate dust, which can cause false alarms or beeping. In such cases, it may be necessary to replace the smoke alarm entirely.
3- Environmental factors: Smoke alarms can be triggered by environmental factors such as dust, steam, or high humidity. If beeping persists, give us a call and we’ll have someone come out and check what might be causing the issue.
4- Lack of cleaning: You need to regularly wipe down smoke alarms to remove any build up of dust and grime.
How many smoke alarms do I need?
Owners have until 2027 to have their house compliant with the new smoke alarm codes and all rentals should be up to the new code from 2022. According to the new code, this is how many you need:
Smoke alarms must be installed on each storey:
- In each bedroom
- In hallways which connect bedrooms and the rest of the dwelling
- If there is no hallway, between the bedrooms and other parts of the storey and if there are no bedrooms on a storey, at least one smoke alarm must be installed in the most likely path of travel to exit the dwelling.
If you are at all unsure if your house is compliant, it is best to book in an electrician who can help determine how many you need and where they need to go. .
